The K-WAVE FESTA Festival takes South Africa by storm!

On 4th December 2022, the Korean Embassy and Korean Cultural Centre hosted the K-WAVE FESTA festival to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Diplomatic relationship between South Korea and South Africa at the Artscape theatre, Cape Town.

The embassy invited Korean performers and artists, namely Nanta, JINJO Crew, and MUSTB to share with us their culture through K-theatre, K-Dance, and K-pop. We had the finest lineup which set the stage on fire, and everyone was entertained throughout the event.

Nanta is a Korean non-verbal performance integrating Korean traditional Samulnori rhythm with comedy and drama in the kitchen, they made their international debut at the 1999 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they received an award for best performance. Nanta's performance made the crowd laugh and wonder at the way the kitchen equipment is used to produce such great music. We also got to learn how to make the music using our hands and feet and Nanta was amazed by the rhythm South Africans have.

Jinjo Crew is a Korean b-boy (breakdancing) crew formed in 2001, known for its intricate teamwork and dynamic showcases. They have received worldwide recognition for being the first b-boy group in the world to hit a grand slam in 40 years of b-boying, winning the world’s top 5 major tournaments. This crew set the stage on fire and left the audience amazed at how talented they are.

MustB is a Korean male K-pop group that consists of five members named Doha, Teageon, Wooyeon, Soohyun, and Sihoo. They debuted in 2019, January and made their debut with the single “I want U”. They are an embodiment of their catchphrase ‘MustB A Light’ meaning they want to become like a ray of light for all their fans. MustB blessed us with their amazing voices and made the audience dance. They also got every girl screaming their bias name.

We really had fun and the performances were out of this world. We got to experience the beauty of Korean culture and talent and, after all the screaming, laughter, and enjoyment, we had amazing Korean food.
