Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You), Jeon Mi-do (Hospital Playlist) and Kim Ji-hyun (Artificial City) in Thirty Nine, play 3 best friends, on the precipice of a new decade in their lives. Each of the women are confronted with events that could alter the trajectory of the year to come.

Son Ye-jin plays the role of Cha Mi-jo a dermatologist in Gangnam Seoul. Mi-jo is ready to take on a year long sabbatical in the USA, but as fate would have it, she meets Kim Seon U (Yeon Woo-jin, My Shy Boss) whose peonies may bring more than just a fragrance into her life.

Jeon Mi-do plays Jeon Chang-Young who works as an acting coach. Jeon has been in long term emotional affair with Mi-jo’s friend Kim Jin-seok (Lee Mu-saeng, World of the Married). After much urging from Mi-jo and her own personal need for growth, Chang-young wants to quit more than just smoking but letting go of Jin-Seok is proving to be quite the challenge.

And finally Kim Ji-hyun plays Jang Jo-hee a cosmetics manager at a department store. She seemingly has a romantic interest in restaurant owner, Park Hyun-joon (Lee Tae-hwan, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim) but wonders if their age gap could prove to be a hindrance in pursuing a relationship.

Roles that center three women in their late 30s, early 40s are sadly still hard to come by, but having Son Ye-jin (the nation’s first love) pushing the boundary we hope to see more and more of these dramas. Thirty Nine airs every Wednesday on Netflix.

TWENTY FIVE TWENTY ONE

Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk take us back to the year of 1998 in this swooping new romantic K-drama that reflects on one’s desires to chase one’s dreams.

The drama starts by introducing us to Na Hee do (Kim Tae-ri,) a fencing prodigy who is determined to train with Go Yoo-rim (Bona, Homemade Love Story). Funding for fencing in her school has been stopped so Na Hee-do is steeped with the task of finding a way to be transferred to Yoo-rim’s school. It’s through this journey she encounters Baek Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk, Start Up) a hard-working young man whose family is forced to declare bankruptcy after the IMF crisis.

From the outside looking in, it seems the drama is going to take us through some gigantic twists and turns as it tries to explain the present day life that each character now lives versus the past. Twenty Five Twenty One airs every Saturday on Netflix.

Forecasting Love and Weather

The King of Netflix is back with another “oh no he didn’t” K-drama sure to keep our hearts fluttering through every second. Song Kang (Nevertheless) stars opposite the incredible Park Min-young (What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim) to forecast the weather and hopefully a blissful love story on the horizon.

Park Min-young plays Jin Ha-kyung in charge of the team responsible in forecasting weather patterns throughout South Korea. Ha-kyung is engaged to Han Ki-jun (Yoon Park, You Are My Spring) a spokesperson for the Korean Meteorological Administration. We begin to witness cracks in their relationship as Ki-jun is frustrated with Ha-kyung’s commitment to her work.

Similarly we see the same passion for the weather in Lee Siwoo, a rookie Severe Weather forecaster who finds himself interning on Ha-kyung’s team. Just as unpredictable as the weather can be, Siwoo and Ha-kyung’s personal lives are thrust into an unprecedented storm that leads to a fateful meeting of new lovers.

Both Song Kang and Park Min-young bring the kind of chemistry we have come to expect from actors of their caliber. Yet again it’s clear why these two make our hearts go TUDUM. Forecasting Love and Weather airs every Sunday on Netflix.
