You have seen her in the movie Sunny, dramas such as her private life, it’s okay not to be okay and recently in Our beloved summer. Park Jin Joo sits down with us to spill the tea on all things Park Jin Joo on this exclusive interview.
You have been active as an actress for many years now. What made you fall in love with acting?
In my early years I didn't have a clear dream. However, as I grew up, I felt the most agitation in my heart and I enjoyed the charm of acting that could move people's hearts. As I followed that path, I became an actor, and I think I'm continuing to do this job to the extent that I cannot think of anything else.
What has been your favourite role so far?
I think that the roles I have taken on so far have come together to make me who I am today. So, it's hard to pick one role, but the work that became a turning point in my acting life was playing a nurse in "Don't Dare to Dream". It was a role that I really wanted to play, and I think I challenged myself with acting that breaks people's prejudices, so I was able to enjoy acting more starting with "Don't Dare to Dream," and I think it was memorable.
We adored the character Yoo Seung-Jae in “It's okay not to be okay”, please share the techniques you use to bring your characters to life?
I like to express people who are likely to be in everyday life, and many people sympathize and are comforted by watching it. It wasn't a big portion of the play, but I was surprised that many people loved it. Even though it's a role that can be seen as hateful, it seems that the viewers have given a lot of love to it by me acting honestly in that role. When expressing a character, I think it is a skill to practice even the details that other people may not be able to express well, and to be brave in acting characters that might seem hateful.
Out of the characters you’ve brought to life, which one would you say has been your favourite to play?
I worked hard with love for all the characters, but if I had to pick one, I like the acting I did in the recent drama “Our beloved summer”. Through the character Lee Sol Yi, I was able to freely express what I wanted to express to my heart's content and act freely.
We love watching you cover some of our favorite songs on your YouTube channel, please tell us more about your YouTube channel @parkjinjoo, what led you to create the channel?
Since the character that I can show to the public is the character in the works that I act in, I wanted to communicate with people by existing as a person named Park Jin-joo. As the time that has passed does not come back, as I get older, I opened the YouTube channel with the desire to share the growing times with many people and get to know them.
You have a beautiful voice. What can we expect from you musically in the near future?
I never imagined that I would be able to perform in front of many people through singing. In fact, rather than planning something, I think this precious opportunity occurred as things naturally flowed. A lot of people like the way I sing, so if given the opportunity, I want to show more diverse sides of myself.
Since the start of the pandemic what new hobbies have you picked up?
I'm a homebody, so I don't have any new hobbies after the pandemic, but I like to watch YouTube videos or reality entertainment shows. These days, I think I look up more of those things than before and invite my acquaintances to my house to have fun chatting.
What are 3 things you think your fans would be surprised to know about you?
I'm more serious than they think. Also, I have a lot of difficulty in ad-libbing or acting freely, and I am afraid of breaking away from what I am prepared for, but I try to overcome it.
Many years from now, what kind of an actor do you want to be remembered as?
I think it would be nice if many people would love, adore me, sympathize, and relate to any character I play. Also, I hope you don't feel awkward even if I am active in various fields, but please watch comfortably and cheer for me. I want to be remembered as an actor who even if the work is over, people can feel that the characters in the works are living somewhere.
For someone who is just starting in the entertainment industry, what would you tell them?
It hasn’t been long since I've been active, but I think it's important to understand and love yourself the most and achieve that goal, as there's a saying that goes “you have to love yourself first so that others will love you too.”
